Getting Through The Airport

Here are the generel steps of how to navigate your way through an airport:

Before you go to the airport

Look up your itinerary online
Go to your airline's website and type in the required information to view your itinerary

Check in (can also be done at the airport)
Get your boarding pass online by ''checking in'' on your airlines website

You will need your reference number/confirmation number/booking number (the 6-digit-number from your E-ticket) to get your boarding pass.

In the airport

1. Find the terminal

2. Check in (get you boarding pass)
Find you airline's check in area (a number).
Check in at the check in-machines or go to the counter and let the staff check you in.

You will need your reference number/confirmation number/booking number (the 6-digit-number from your E-ticket) or the barcode to get your boarding pass.

3. Check in your luggage
Check in your luggage at your airline's counter.
Make sure to ask the staff if your luggage is checked in all the way to your final destination.

4. Go through security
Remember to check the liquid rules and the prohibited items of the countries you are travelling to.

If you are travelling to the U.S. you can check out TSA's website for liquid rules and prohibited items or if you are in doubt about whether your item will pass the security rules or not.

5. Go to your gate
Look at the signs (they are everywhere) to find your gate and go to it when it says 'boarding'.
The gate is not always shown on the screen right away and can also be changed several times before the departure so remember to be aware of that.

Contact your exchange organization if your flight is delayed or cancelled (or do as your organization has instructed you to do).

Tips:
- Always have an extra set of clothes in your hand luggage, so you are covered if your checked in luggage goes missing
- Wear a digital watch (remember to change the time if you fly through different time zones)
- Buy a passport/boarding pass holder
- Buy a luggage scale
- Bring a sleep mask, travel blanket, and ear plugs for the flight
- Invest in a world adapter (approximately $30) and an extension chord
