Great question. I have the answer: as little as possible!
What to bring obviously varies from student to student depending on how much you count on shopping in your home country.
Buying clothes and items in your host country instead of bringing a stuffed suitcase makes the transitioning more smooth.
Download a packing list template like this one and print it out (this gives you a better overview of your packing)
Remember: you can always buy the stuff you forget in your host country (apart from the important documents of course. Those are obviously important not to forget)
OBS: remember to check your airlines' guidelines in terms of liquid rules, prohibited items, etc.
- Vacuum seal your clothing to make it take up less space in your suitcase
- Use packing cubes
- Ranger roll your clothes to make it take up as little space in your suitcase as possible
- Place your heaviest items in you hand luggage and 'personal item'.
- Buy a luggage scale to make sure your suitcase does not exceed the weight limit provided by your airline
- Always pack an extra set of clothing in your hand luggage in case your checked luggage gets lost for a couple of days.
- Buy a world adapter - $25 (great investment for a travel soul)
When preparing to a travel, lay out all your clothes and all your money. Then take half the clothes and twice the money.- Susan Heller
